Reduce,
reuse, recycle: just as it is the last action
in this cycle, recycling should be the last step of our use of
a material. Really, we should think more about reducing and reusing
what we consume. Packaging is something that we take for granted,
since it seems to be an inevitable part of being a consumer. To
a certain extent, packaging is inevitable, but by shopping intelligently
and exercising some creativity, we can find ways to get what we
need in ways that produce less waste. A little creativity can
give that small amount of waste a new life, without even having
to consider conventional means of recycling.
Creating space for a recycling
center in your home is not as difficult as you might think. With
a little creativity, even people who live in less than 1,000 square
feet can find a convenient place to keep recyclables until they
are ready to go out. Under the kitchen sink, in a closet, garage
or other storage areas are all great nooks to make the process
less cumbersome. Even if you don’t have curbside pickup
in your neighborhood, many local businesses and schools have recycling
bins in their parking lots that are for the community to use.
So, check the parking lots in your area! When you are ready to
get rid of your recycling, load it in your trunk and swing by
the parking lot while you are out running errands. It takes a
bit of extra effort, but it certainly is worth it for the many
benefits - ecological and economical - that we gain from taking
responsibility for the future of our trash. Here are some tips
on how you can reuse materials you already have - many of which
are not often easily recycled - as well as recycle materials that,
until recently, have been destined only for the landfill.
